Female Genital Mutilation

In my piece I tried to imagine how I would have feel if I had my future taken away from my via FGM. I thought of myself as an adult coming to terms with everything that has happened to me starting at such a young age and some of the regrets and pain (both physical and psychological I would go through). I chose to juxtapose the images of the little girl with the isolated woman. The little girl appears happy and represents the hope and possibilities a child has, versus the older woman whose voice was taken away from her and whose pain is a central part of their life. The iceberg goes directly through the center of the woman’s body where the red marker spills out of her body and throughout the page. There are words behind the woman “my youth, my future, my life all taken only pain only pain.”
