May 23, 2014 Elliot Rodger opened fire in the city of Isla
Vista, near the University of California, Santa Barbara.

The incident began in his college apartment where he stabbed three of his roommates before driving to a sorority house and proceeding to shoot three female students.

Rodger then drove to a nearby deli and shot a male student and continued to speed through the city streets shooting and hitting pedestrians in his BMW.

After exchanging gunfire with the Isla Vista police, Rodger crashed his car into a parked car. Police found Rodger dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Rodger had posted a video titled“ Elliot Rodger’s Retribution” onto his personal YouTube channel. In the video, he explained his plan and referred to the“ Day ofRetribution” as one that will finally punish those who have caused him years of anguish and suffering.

Psychological Impact

Sudden loss of a previously safe environment can cause victims to develop numerous trauma-related disorders such as Acute Stress Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Depression and Anxiety.

Due to the widespread media coverage that followed the Isla Vista shooting, as well as Rodger’s YouTube clip and his manifesto, students, teachers and family members were left feeling unsafe and unprotected
