December 2, 2015: San Bernardino Shooting

Background
  • On December 2, 2015, a terrorist attack occurred at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California, where assistance is provided to people with disabilities.

  • Mr. Farook, a county health inspector left a Christmas event early and returned at about 11 a.m.. He and his wife were heavily armed with assault rifles.

  • People in nearby buildings remained hidden in their offices for two hours.

  • Police evacuated the injured, and dozens fled to a nearby golf course.

  • The suspects escaped, but were shot dead by police.

  • The F.B.I director later reported that Mr. Farook and Ms. Malik had been talking of an attack as far back as two years ago long before they got married in 2014. The F.B.I also discovered video evidence that the couple went to shooting ranges or target praactice.

  • Officials discovered a potential link to Islamic Extremism, and the incident was considered a terrorist attack. 

Death and Injury​​

  • A total of 14 civilians reported killed, and 22 others were seriously injured. Among those injured were two police officers - one was wounded during the gunfight, and the other officer was injured by flying glass. Twelve of the fourteen dead were county employees, and ten were environmental health specialists.

 

 
Psychological Impact
  • The immediate and long-term psychological impact of the shooting was displayed by survivors. For example, many reported feeling terrified to go back to work and saddened by their coworkers' empty cubicles. Some of the victims were stilll in shock and were unable to go back to work due to their emotional distress.

  • The waiting period and not knowing what was happening was the most common and terrifying experience for the survivors overall.

  • Family members experienced anger resulting from the attack, and President Obama called for common-sense gun safety laws and stronger background checks.
