April 15, 2013: BOSTON MARATHON BOMBINGS
Background
-
At 2:49 pm, two bombs, placed by Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, detonated near the finish line of the Boston Marathon.
-
The suspects were identified by the FBI on April 18, 2013, and a manhunt ensued.
-
The brothers traveled to MIT where they killed a police officer and then stole an SUV, taking the driver hostage (he escaped later while the suspects were at a gas station).
-
A shootout occurred between the suspects and police, and Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed. Dzhokhar was captured on the night of April 19 hiding in a boat. He was found by the boat’s owner and was also spotted by a helicopter using thermal infrared imaging.
Death and Injury
-
5 deaths total: 3 people died during the initial bombings on April 15. One police officer died at MIT. Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed during the police shootout.
-
280 injuries: many at the initial bombing sights, and multiple police officers during the shootout.
-
At least 16 people lost one limb, 3 lost more than one limb.

Psychological Impact
-
11% of children at the marathon finish line experienced PTSD one year after the bombing.
-
Children exposed to the manhunt activities showed signs of other problems, including emotional disturbances, acting-out behaviors, trouble with hyperactivity and paying attention and conflicts with peers.
-
Many adult runners and spectators experienced PTSD, guilt, lasting fear, flashbacks, numbness, and isolation.
