   April 15, 2013: BOSTON MARATHON BOMBINGS

Background

 

  • At 2:49 pm, two bombs, placed by Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, detonated near the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

  • The suspects were identified by the FBI on April 18, 2013, and a manhunt ensued.

  • The brothers traveled to MIT where they killed a police officer and then stole an SUV, taking the driver hostage (he escaped later while the suspects were at a gas station).

  • A shootout occurred between the suspects and police, and Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed. Dzhokhar was captured on the night of April 19 hiding in a boat. He was found by the boat’s owner and was also spotted by a helicopter using thermal infrared imaging.

 

Death and Injury

 

  • 5 deaths total: 3 people died during the initial bombings on April 15. One police officer died at MIT. Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed during the police shootout.

  • 280 injuries: many at the initial bombing sights, and multiple police officers during the shootout.

  • At least 16 people lost one limb, 3 lost more than one limb.

 

 

Psychological Impact
 
  • 11% of children at the marathon finish line experienced PTSD one year after the bombing.

  • Children exposed to the manhunt activities showed signs of other problems, including emotional disturbances, acting-out behaviors, trouble with hyperactivity and paying attention and conflicts with peers.

  • Many adult runners and spectators experienced PTSD, guilt, lasting fear, flashbacks, numbness, and isolation.
